When you think of Beagles, you probably picture a pack of these little guys baying at the top of their lungs as they race after a fox or rabbit. While it is true that these dogs are popular hunting dogs and have been used to hunt for several centuries, they also make wonderful family pets. The Beagle has a keen sense of smell and a strong hunting instinct. This member of the American Kennel Club's hound group actually comes in two sizes, under thirteen inches and thirteen to fifteen inches. |

Beagles are happy loving dogs that have a long relationship with man as a hunting companion. Although no one knows for sure where these dogs descended from, there are records of small hunting dogs that go back to the 13th century and it is no secret these dogs are quite successful for hunting fox and rabbit.
Their great nose not withstanding, beagles are also fun companions that can adapt easily to family life. However, you will have to keep in mind that the Beagle does have strong instincts for the chase and you must never let him loose or walk him without his lead. |

The Beagle was considered to be the most popular dog during the 1950's in the United States. The Beagle first originated in the eleventh century when William the Conqueror was known for bringing the Talbot hound to Great Britain. The Talbot Hound was a scent hound, white in color that is thought to be an ancestor of the Beagle. The Talbot hound is now extinct. Another link to the evolution of the Beagle is the black and tan Irish Kerry Beagles. This type of dog was a small game hunter. The Beagle has such a strong sense of smell because of this particular ancestry. |
